The chickens are coming!

Well, its been a while since I posted on here, but April has finally arrived and the chickens will be on their way this week!

Unfortunately, the Light Brahmas (with the fluffy, feathered feet) did not hatch this week - so the hatchery called me to make a substitution. At first I was going to wait, but the woman informed me that it could be MONTHS before another hatch of Brahmas is run. With that in mind, I decided on 3 Easter Eggers (not because it happens to be Easter this weekend).

Easter Eggers are not a breed per se, but a variety of chicken that does not conform to any breed standard but lays large to extra large eggs that vary in shade from blue to green to olive to aqua and sometimes even pinkish. (how neat!) Easter Eggers vary widely in color and conformation, and are exceptionally friendly and hardy. Since they are usually quite friendly to children and humans in general, they are a great choice for a family flock. Most hatcheries mistakenly label their Easter Eggers as Ameraucanas or Araucanas (or various misspellings thereof). True Ameraucanas and Araucanas are currently only available through breeders. Eater Eggers do not qualify to be shown, since they do not conform to a breed standard.

Hopefully the chicks will arrive tomorrow! More posts to follow!

Thanks for checking in!
